It is a surgical procedure that aims to increase the amount of bone in the posterior maxilla. This is done by lifting the lower (sinus membrane) and placing bone graft underneath it.
When a tooth is extracted the vacant tooth socket collapses, and as it heals the bone loses height and width. In other words, when a tooth is lost, it diminishes the thickness of the underlying bone. Overall, this leads to a loss in the volume of bone that is available for implantation. Dental Implants rely on osseointegration (bone acceptance of the titanium implant). This means they need a good amount of healthy bone in order to stay in their place and function as anchors on a later date.
The area of the upper premolars and molars is most affected because of the presence of the maxillary sinus, a breathing cavity in our upper jaw.
When needing a good amount of bone for implants in the molar region of the upper jaw a sinus lift procedure will be required to be able to give the bone the height and width needed to receive an implant.
The goal of the sinus lift is to graft extra bone into the maxillary sinus, so more bone is available to support a dental implant on a later or immediate placement.
The procedure at Dental Design Studio in Cancun is performed by our Maxillofacial Surgeon. They are different techniques depending on each case. The procedure can be done under local anesthesia or sedation.
